The Old Cartridge Method If you're the kind of person who keeps a bag of used cartridges on hand and takes them periodically to the recycler, you can think of this technique as your reward. The printer should see them as new, because many models have only enough memory to store the last two sets of installed cartridges. This is also true for most compatible cartridges which come from China -- ink compatibility and subsequent printer reliability of such cartridges is considered somewhat questionable. With printer manufacturers making ink cartridges more and more sophisticated these days, should you try and do-it-yourself, you will need to ensure that a proper ink fill occurs to avoid issues like cross-contamination between colors, cartridge bleed, and the inevitable streaking or white lines in printed output.
Internet access is required and not included. Those are available with or without ink level monitoring, and they'll let you use your refilled cartridges without a fuss. If you fill the cartridge with new ink, your printer still thinks it's empty because of the number of pages printed. The ink level indicator will falsely signal as empty.
